Structural design and structural assessment use many of the same engineering principles, but they answer different questions.
Structural design
Design develops a solution for a proposed requirement. The engineer can select dimensions, materials, details and load paths so that the completed work meets the design criteria.
Structural assessment
Assessment considers an existing structure or component whose geometry, material properties, condition and construction details may not be fully known. The task is to determine whether it is suitable for an existing or proposed use and to identify any restrictions or remedial work.
Why assessment can be more uncertain
Existing structures may differ from drawings, have hidden connections, contain deterioration or have been altered during their life. Investigation, measurement, opening-up or material testing may therefore be needed before a reliable conclusion can be reached.
Possible outcomes
- The existing asset is suitable for the proposed use
- It is suitable subject to defined restrictions or monitoring
- Strengthening, repair or alteration is required
- Further investigation is needed before a conclusion can be made
Agree the required level of confidence
A preliminary screening assessment is different from a detailed verification for construction or continued operation. The intended decision and acceptable uncertainty should be made clear when agreeing the scope.
